Building a Successful Career - Step One

The first step in building a successful career starts from understanding one important person - you. It is the fundamental and hardest step, because you cannot see yourself externally, but only can get external validation from other people… people you trust, people you do not trust, people you love and even people you hate.

It is very hard to get a real view of yourself when you live in an ever changing and biased world. We have to live with that person we see in the mirror everyday. It is human nature to be self-centered and love oneself. Most people are willing to live in a self-filtered fantasy world unconsciously rejecting other people's perspectives in order to protect such a fantasyland in their own minds. However, in some extreme cases, people who have low self-esteem can only see their weaknesses. They are living in a dark critical self- constructed cave in their mind and can hardly see any of their prior successes and strengths. These people must learn to love themselves before they can really learn to like others and work with others.

Everyone has two parts. One part is inside you, how you think, reason and make decisions. The other part is outside of you, the perception others have of you. Keep in mind that perception is truth to the person who perceives it. You cannot say a person’s perception of you is not true because it is true to him. We are not always very truthful with ourselves; we filter out information, only believing what we want to believe. So the problem is - the disconnect between the inner you and how others perceive you

Let’s construct a model that can help you visualize every aspect of the true you, to help you understand yourself systemically.

We will construct a virtual box, which has 6 facets. Each facet represents one aspect of you; it can help you understand your drive, why you think, act, and reason in certain ways.

Facet one includes the qualities you have when you are born. These include your IQ, physical attributes, energy level, ego and drive. These qualities are within you waiting for you to develop to the maximum.
Facet two includes the qualities learned while you are growing up. They include your values, willingness to take risks or your aversion to take risks.
Facet three is the quality and skills that you developed yourself such as: EQ, physical appearance, execution ability, healthy living, work habits and communication ability.
Facet four includes your family and social environment, friends and social network.
Facet five is your daily work environment, bosses, peers, and employees.
Facet, six, includes your business relationships (clients) that provide opportunities as well as challenges.

Everyone lives in such a virtual box: the box has different shapes defined by various qualities and factors. We think, make and execute our decisions and react to the external world from this virtual box. In the following weeks, we will give you some action items to help you understand yourself better. We will give you recommended reading and answer some of your questions. This should be fun while you get to know that important person – you
